    Sat 17th October, 2009

Saturday found us at Pocklington on a cold crisp but sunny morning after a noisy but pleasant drive in the orange shoebox, Me and Matt in the front, Jess and Erin hanging on in the back. After a tour of the clubhouse we help set up the flight line for what looked like a quiet smooth air club day perfect for training, unlike the pervious Sunday’s wild ride, don’t worry young aviators you weren’t responsible for that hard landing (gusty day). John rolled in a little later on his peddle and pop blue faced and frustrated over lack of power, Get a car.

Jess and Erin where first to fly in the Pooch for there first ever gliding lesson, a couple of flights each I think and a happy instructor who had very little instructing to do, girls are always natural first time pilots sorry boys it’s a multitasking thing, large egos don’t help fly gliders and the stick is a precision instrument not a piece of exercise equipment. John flew later on progressing further towards solo, 5 flights is it now? And becoming completely obsessed about thermals, seriously it is winter they will disappear soon. We will have the opportunity to fly high wave and maybe go ridge running to Sutton Bank later but remember to get those flights in. Solo will come quickly and you’ll soon be soaring without commentary from the back seat, its bliss. Target next summer. Me and Matt has a rather brief potter in the K8 to keep the hand in but gave up to save funds for that aero tow into wave in the following weeks to come.

Jess and Erin where defeated by the cold and took the bus back home, remember to dress warm, all in one suits are great but look daft, city cloths are too nice to spoil. John also left early. Informally I add returning members should attempt to either arrive to unpack the hanger or stay to help pack, we operate alone but work as a team and gliders don’t pack themselves. Pocklington will always support and help us in anything so long as we also help them, sometimes you have to leave which is fine but at least ensure that there is a couple of representatives from the society to help till the end.

A successful day all round, hopefully two new members and one committed to a lifelong obsession. See you all in a fortnight I’m in Bristol next weekend.

Feel free to comment on missed details, witty remarks or post photos (can we do that?)

It appears we can upload pics but only by pasting in a link to the photo stored on a on-line album, I used google but maybe facebook will also work. I could set up a google photo album assessable to everyone but you will have to paste the link.

Sounds like a good weekend up north Adam!

Me down south, I spent the Saturday ridge running in the LS4 out of Parham! Flew around 80kms on the task..so had a very enjoyable day..but need to sort out this silver distance! I also got my Silver Height ratified by the BGA this week, which I did on the last sunday of Inter-Unis, when most people had gone home, in our very own Ka6!

Glad to hear the Uni has lots of new members this year and hope you are all enjoying this wonderful sport!

Wet on the floor but crisp in the air, greasy grass, soggy knees and glider ruts all over the place, a typical autumnal day. Just myself and my newly indoctrinated friend Mally took the hour long drive to the field to find a quiet club day the usual crowd with a few stragglers appearing towards lunch time.

Mally took just one ride which was apparently enough (whatever) completing his first ever flight and also his sister Carmen did the same who met us later on in the day. I took another check ride with yet another of Pocklington's infinite number of instructors after the quality of my log book was consulted, I must have flown with them all by now?

We have truly progressed into winter now, the thermals gone, the wind cold but it is still a fantastic time for training and bacon butties, get yer name on the list. I hope to get up to Sutton Bank soon for a little ridge blasting or failing that going to learn some aerobatics.
