FAQ

How do I join and how much it costs?

After fresher's week, you can join the gliding club at any time. You just need to contact one of the committee.
You will need to fill in a form and pay £20 for a year's membership at the Gliding club. Your £20 will be used by the club for various expenses such as glider maintenance, hanagarage, and insurance etc…

Once this is done you can put your name down on our trips!

How do I get on a trip?

We organise trips most saturdays and sundays. We rely on members that have cars to take people up with them.
The trips are organised using our forum.
- Click on the weekend you would like to go.
- Reply, before thursday of each week, with your full name, SID, LUUGS memebership number and phone number and of course if you'd like to go sat, sun or don't mind.
- Final trip lists are posted thursday along with place and time of meeting. Please check that you are on the final list. Unfortunatly, We cannot always fulfill the high demand, so if your name doesn't appear, please put your name down again for the following week end, you'll get priority on other people that have been before you!

What will I be flying?

Beginners fly in two seaters (one for the instructor and one for you!!). Clevelands gliding club owns two double seaters that we can fly in:

ASK21, Glass fiber glider
ASK21, Glass fiber glider

K13, Wood and fabric wings steel tube fuselage
K13, Wood and fabric wings steel tube fuselage

Clevelands gliding club also own a few single seaters for experienced pilots. For more information please see the Dishforth Website.

LUUGS also part-owns a K6cr single seater and fully owns a K7 two seater that, after some neglect, is currently undergoing maintenance and hopefully should be flying again next year.  Once back flying we hope to provide soaring at very low prices.
How much does the flying cost?

Clevelands gliding club have great prices, check this out!

- Winch flights:

If you go up with a winch launch for 10 min or less, you will pay £4.
If you’re lucky and get in to thermals, and fly for 30 mins you pay £4 + 20mins x 28 p = £9.60.

- Aerotow flight:

Aerotow is a bit more expensive as you have to pay for the time in the air of the tug, plus the soaring fee. The tug flying cost is £1.85/min.
A typical launch to 2000ft is around 7min tug flying time. Say you stay up for 20 min.
So 7min tug time and 20min flight >> 7x £1.85 + 20x £0.28 = £18.55
